As the author of Living Your Intuitive Genius, one of the most common questions I hear is this:

How do I know if it is my intuition… or if it is fear, anxiety, or just my mind making things up?

It is such an important question. Because most people genuinely want to trust themselves… they just do not feel confident that they can.

A big part of that comes from not having a real relationship with ourselves. We are not used to listening inward. We have not practiced recognizing our own internal language. So when something does arise from within… it can feel unfamiliar. Even unreliable.

We live in a world that constantly reinforces doing more, achieving more, and figuring things out. And because of that, we have slowly moved away from making space to listen.

We have placed so much value on logic and reasoning… on what makes sense after we analyze it… that anything that does not immediately fit that framework tends to get dismissed.

Yet when you begin to pay attention to life in a different way, you start to notice something. The answers do not always arrive in a logical sequence. Sometimes they show up as a feeling, a quiet knowing, or a subtle nudge that does not fully make sense in the moment. And because of that… we override it.

There is a quote often attributed to Albert Einstein that captures this beautifully:

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

So, the first step in reconnecting with your intuition is being willing to trust that what you are hearing may be coming from a deeper place of wisdom… even before you fully understand it. And then having the courage to follow it.

Intuition Is Quiet by Design

Intuition is not loud or forceful. It is usually quiet, subtle, and feels more like a gentle nudge than a command. Which is exactly why it is so easy to miss.

If your internal state is busy, stressed, or overwhelmed… that subtle signal gets drowned out.

From a neuroscience perspective, this makes sense. The brain is constantly interpreting signals from the body through what is called interoception… essentially, your ability to sense what is happening inside of you. Your internal world is always communicating. But the clarity of that communication depends on the state you are in.

When you are anxious, rushed, or emotionally heightened, everything can start to feel urgent and important. And in that state, fear can easily present itself as intuition.

This is why developing intuition is not just about learning to think differently. It is about learning how to regulate your state… so you can actually hear what is true.

When you slow down, even briefly, something shifts. Your breathing changes, your body softens, and your awareness expands. And it is within that space that a different kind of knowing becomes available to you.

What the Science Says

Research from the HeartMath Institute supports this in a really interesting way. Their studies show that the heart is not simply responding to the brain… but is actually processing information on its own. In some cases, it can register intuitive signals seconds before we become consciously aware of them.

What that means in practical terms is that your body is often picking up on something before your mind has had a chance to explain it. Which is why trying to think your way into clarity can sometimes feel so frustrating.

This is also why reconnecting with your intuition involves reconnecting with your body… not just your thoughts. Because your body is part of how you receive information.

We even think of it as a gut feeling… or a heart feeling. And that language exists for a reason.

How Intuition Feels

One of the simplest ways I help people begin to attune to their intuition is to notice what is happening in their body.

When fear is speaking, it tends to feel tight, urgent, and pressured. Almost like it is pushing you into a decision.

Intuition does not communicate in “you have to” or “you should.” Those tend to be learned voices… from family, society, or past conditioning.

Intuition feels more grounded, steady, and clear.

It does not rush or argue with you, and it does not need to prove itself.

It simply presents itself… and allows you to choose.

As you begin to notice these differences, you start to recognize your own internal patterns. And over time, what once felt confusing becomes much easier to identify.

Trust Is Built in Small Moments

Developing trust with your intuition is not something that happens all at once. It is built over time… through small moments where you pause, listen, and choose to honor what you receive.

If you want to begin strengthening this connection, start simple.

Take a moment to quiet yourself. Take a breath. And ask a question like:

“What is the next step for me here?”

Then listen… without forcing an answer.

When something comes up, even if it feels subtle, allow yourself to consider it. If you want to deepen your trust, you can even ask for confirmation. Stay open to noticing how the answer might show up again over the next couple of days… whether through a conversation, something you read, or an unexpected moment of clarity.

Life responds when you are listening.

A Personal Experience

There was a point in my life where, on paper, everything looked exactly how it was supposed to.

I had a successful career in the financial world. I was stable, accomplished, and doing well by every external measure.

And yet… there was something happening internally that I could not ignore.

I kept hearing this quiet, persistent thought:

“Is this all you are going to do? You are meant for more.”

It did not come once. It came over and over again.

And the interesting part is… nothing was wrong. There was no logical reason to change anything.

But that voice did not go away.

At some point, I had to make a decision. Was I going to keep doing what made sense… or was I going to start listening to what I was hearing?

What is important to understand is that this did not come with a full plan. I did not suddenly see the entire path laid out in front of me. It unfolded step by step.

I would hear something, take action, and then the next step would reveal itself.

And as I continued to follow it, things began to happen that I could not have planned. Doors opened. Conversations happened at the right time. Opportunities showed up that I was not even aware of before.

There was a level of synchronicity to it that, looking back, made it clear I was moving in the right direction.

Not because everything was easy… but because I found myself growing into spaces I would not have stepped into on my own. Being in rooms I would not have been in. Having conversations I would not have had.

That path led me to invest in becoming a life coach, and eventually into the work I do today as a healing mindset coach, supporting people navigating cancer alongside their medical care.

That journey deepened my trust in intuition. Because it showed me that there is a level of awareness available to us that can see beyond what we currently understand.

Living Guided

When you begin to live this way… you are no longer forcing decisions or overanalyzing every step. You begin to move with a sense of knowing… in a way that feels more aligned and grounded.

I see this with my clients as well.

Recently, someone I was working with began exploring a second career after surviving a stroke she had once been told she would not recover from. Through connecting with her intuition, she realized that her experience was not just something she went through… but something she was meant to share.

She is now building something meaningful from that experience, moving forward with trust… even without having every detail figured out.

When Intuition Is There… But You Don’t Trust It Yet

What I see most often is not that people lack intuition.

It is that they hear something… and then immediately talk themselves out of it.

They second-guess it, look for proof, and wait until it makes logical sense.

And in that space… the moment passes.

Over time, this creates a pattern of hesitation where you start to rely more on overthinking than on your own inner guidance. And that can leave you feeling stuck… even when part of you already knows what the next step is.

This is not because you are doing something wrong.

It is simply because you have not yet built the trust to move with what you are hearing.

And trust… is something that can be developed.

Your Next Step

Intuition is not something reserved for a select few. It is something we all have access to. But it requires space, presence, and a willingness to listen.

So instead of trying to figure everything out… I will leave you with this:

What have you been hearing… that you keep talking yourself out of?
